In order to understand the potential of the world’s fastest FF sports car, we tested the stock CIVIC Type R on the race track, the winding roads and the streets of Japan. Right away, we noticed the aggressive suspension set up of the stock vehicle with very high roll rigidity potential. However, on the track, the roll initiated with a slight delay which prevented the driver to smoothly trace the intended cornering line at entry. Meanwhile, the ride was a little too harsh for street driving. Our goal was clear. To develop progressive springs to improve performance driving at all stages, allowing the driver to trace the ideal cornering line, yet deliver comfort on the street.
To improve sports driving performance, we
increased the spring rate by 10% relative to stock. For better suppleness going
over road gaps, we secured more rebound stroke. Installation of our springs
will bring the car down by approximately 20mm for lower center of gravity.
Our development team also worked hard to improve ride comfort. By increasing the coil therefore extending the length of the spring, we lowered the required load to initiate the response of the spring. The response rate was fine tuned by implementing an irregular-pitched spring having a barrel-shaped cross section profile. The lowered load requirement to initiate spring response improved ride comfort for street use, while the progressive spring rate delivers traction for higher speeds and spirited driving. The SPOON SPORTS Progressive Spring Set enhances the driver’s ability to control and enjoy the true potential of the CIVIC Type R.
In order for the engine to run efficiently, it needs to be fed with a sufficient amount of air.
Whether it is a normally aspirated or a turbo engine, taking in cooler air = higher density air allows the engine to run with more efficiency. Something we all know from experience.
Materializing our ideas, we produced prototypes of our air intake duct, testing them on our cars and on the bench. For the ultimate test, we installed the air duct to our racing car and ran the 25 Hours at Thunderhill.
The effectiveness of the air intake duct was obvious. All our drivers came back with positive feedback, experiencing good torque at all rpms making the car easier to drive. Also, with higher-than-expected fuel efficiency, we were able to finish the race first-in-class.
Using data obtained from racing, final modifications were made to finally produce the SPOON SPORTS Carbon Air Duct.
Our Carbon Air Duct comes in two separate parts.
The air scoop placed inside the front grille, helps to shutout hot air accumulating in the engine bay. The air duct plate placed inside the engine bay delivers fresh air to the air cleaner box.
With the stock air intake configuration, air is taken in from inside the front grille, possibly including air heated from the radiator, especially in low-speed corners. By placing an air scoop at the very front of the grille, our product ensures the flow of clean air unaffected from the radiator as well as actively taking in airflow from driving.
The Air Duct Plate placed inside the engine bay ensures delivery of clean air from the air intake scoop.
Without disturbing the well-designed heat insulation structure of the stock intake layout, our Carbon Air Duct helps to secure cooler and stable flow of air for maximum power output of the FK8.
The Air Scoop is made from FRP and the Air Duct Plate is made from Prepreg Carbon/Kevlar.
Compatible with both the stock bumper or the SPOON Aero Bumper.
SPOON SPORTS is pleased to offer the CIVIC TYPE R (FL5)
Air Cleaner as the latest addition to our product portfolio.
The Honda’s air intake system is renowned for its
innovative method to control the intake pulsation of the normally aspirated
engine, optimizing the response and drivability. It is a high-performance air
intake system distinctively designed to lower the intake air temperature.
Our Air Cleaner for the CIVIC TYPE R (FL5) has been
developed to maximize the potential of the air intake system.
Increasing the material density of the air filter allows
for a greater particle collection capability but decreases the air flow.
Using filter materials with lower density may allow for
greater air flow, however, you trade in the particle removal capabilities. More
than that, the excessive air flow may cause a decrease in lower-end torque thus
hampering the overall drivability.
The filtration material of our Air Cleaner was carefully
developed, optimizing the torque/power output on the dyno and undergoing
numerous real world road testing.
The SPOON SPORTS Air Cleaner was developed to bring out
the maximum potential of the CIVIC TYPE R (FL5).
